ATLAS / KUNSKA

ATLAS / KUNSKA maps the cultural infrastructure of the Nordic Arctic and develops connections across national borders.

The project brings together museums, art institutions, artist run spaces, galleries, academies, residencies, festivals and cultural organisations across Northern Norway, Northern Sweden, Northern Finland and Sápmi through an interactive map, a growing directory and cross border research and exchange.

ATLAS is evolving into KUNSKA, expanding from a cultural map into a research and network project connecting contemporary art across the Nordic Arctic.

RESEARCH & NETWORK

Alongside the public map, Atlas develops an ongoing research network across the Nordic Arctic, connecting artistic institutions, independent initiatives, educational environments, researchers and cultural practitioners.

Through field research, dialogue and cross-border exchange, the project follows how artistic communities operate, collaborate and develop across the North.

FROM MAP TO NETWORK

Atlas is conceived as more than a directory.

Its long-term ambition is to develop relationships with the organisations represented through the project and gradually build a network based on visibility, exchange, dialogue, connection and mutual recognition across the Nordic Arctic.

Participation in Atlas will be developed through direct dialogue with individual organisations.

As the project develops, individual organisation profiles may provide more detailed information about their programmes, activities and local contexts, connecting them to the wider cultural geography represented through Atlas.

The project may eventually develop a shared visual identity that allows participating organisations to make their connection to Atlas visible both digitally and within their physical spaces.

A LIVING CULTURAL ECOSYSTEM

Atlas does not claim to provide a fixed, exhaustive or definitive map of cultural activity in the North. It is an evolving editorial, research and networking project.

New organisations, independent initiatives and cultural spaces can be researched and added as the project develops. The organisations currently mapped represent the current research base of Atlas.

Inclusion in the directory documents an organisation’s presence within the cultural landscape researched by Atlas and does not imply formal membership, partnership or endorsement.

The directory below is organised by present-day geographical areas for navigation. These categories are not intended to define cultural boundaries: Sápmi extends across national borders, and Sámi institutions and artistic practices represented in Atlas form part of this wider cross-border cultural geography.
