The Data Center Landscape

The contemporary Arctic is increasingly described as remote.

But in technological terms, it is becoming deeply central.

Across Northern Europe, northern territories are now discussed not only through tourism or climate, but through infrastructure: energy grids, fibre connections, subsea cables, AI facilities, cloud storage, and high-capacity computing.

The North is becoming machine-readable landscape.

In recent years, Norway has actively promoted the development of data centers, describing them as part of the country’s critical digital infrastructure and future industrial strategy.

Cold climate itself becomes economic resource.

Lower temperatures reduce cooling costs for servers and high-performance computing systems. Renewable hydroelectric energy strengthens the narrative of “green digital infrastructure.” The Arctic, once imagined as distant wilderness, is increasingly reframed as optimal technological terrain.

In 2025, Reuters reported plans for “Stargate Norway,” a major AI infrastructure project connected to OpenAI, Aker, and Nscale, expected to install tens of thousands of advanced NVIDIA chips in Northern Norway.

At the same time, projects like Polar Connect propose Arctic subsea fibre routes between Europe and Asia, transforming the polar region into strategic communication corridor.

This changes the meaning of landscape itself.

The Arctic is no longer perceived only through mountains, fjords, or ice.

It is increasingly interpreted through bandwidth, energy capacity, cooling efficiency, and geopolitical access.

Nature becomes operational.

The strange paradox is that digital infrastructure often appears visually invisible. A data center rarely produces the spectacular imagery associated with mining or heavy industry. Servers remain hidden behind controlled architecture. Fibre cables disappear underwater. Cloud infrastructure deliberately avoids visual drama.

Yet its territorial impact is immense.

Energy consumption.

Land use.

Industrial zoning.

Security concerns.

Water systems.

Strategic dependence.

Contemporary art has increasingly explored this invisibility: the contradiction between the apparent immateriality of digital life and the enormous physical systems sustaining it.

The cloud is not abstract.

It is territorial.

And perhaps nowhere is this contradiction becoming more visible than in the Arctic, where the rhetoric of untouched nature now coexists with the rapid expansion of digital infrastructure economies.

The North is no longer outside technological systems.

It is becoming one of their foundations.
